Balancing work and kids at home during the summer can be tricky, especially when school is out and routines shift. Here are some practical strategies to help manage both:
1. Create a Summer Schedule
š Daily routine: Block time for work, activities for the kids, meals, quiet time, and outdoor play.
š Visual calendar: Post a weekly calendar the kids can seeāthis gives them a sense of structure and something to look forward to.
2. Set Work Boundaries
āDedicated workspace: Even if itās a corner, make it clear that itās your āwork zone.ā
āWork blocks: Use focused blocks of time (early morning, nap time, or screen time) to get key tasks done.
3. Independent Activities
āStock up on activity kits, books, puzzles, and craftsĀ they can do solo.
āRotate toys and games to keep them fresh and engaging.
āConsider audio stories or educational apps for screen time that feels constructive.
4. Camps & Childcare
āIf possible, enroll kids in day camps, even part-time. It gives them fun time with peers and gives you focus time.
āExplore local rec centers, church programs, or shared care with other families.
5. Flex Your Work Hours
āTalk to your employer about flex time or a modified summer schedule.
āSome parents do split shiftsāearly morning work, break for kid time, then finish work in the evening.
6. Get Them Involved
āLet older kids help with simple tasks around the house or with younger siblings (with rewards!).
āGive them "jobs" during your work time so they feel important and responsible.
7. Lower the Bar Sometimes
āSome days will go off the railsāand thatās okay.
āKeep expectations realistic. A little screen time or a messy kitchen won't derail your summer.
Hope these tips will make you feel comfortable and ready to having your kids back at home all day. If you and any tips for us, please do share!
